Never called up an elk, but I have called in a lot of turkeys. It is not uncommon to have multiple gobblers come in together, so I would assume that it would not be unusual for elk to do the same.
They are all looking for the same thing. I think Buglmin probably had it right, cause a herd bull usually won't leave his harem, just guessing though,,
