I've got an older Lowrance and it still works fine. My brother has the basic Garmin e-treks that you can get for $99 and it works good. You can get them as advanced or simple as you want.

A map and compass are the only things I trust.

when hunting public land,I choose a parcel of the area until I KNOW it well, then branch out from there, like SMITTY ,I use a terrain map and compass.I'VE never been lost but was a bit turned around for a few days after missplacing my compass.

            6phunter,
I too have never been lost, I just wasnt sure where I was. My dad decided it would be a good idea to try a gps one time. Lucky for us I continually checked my compass and found that we were go away from where we wanted to be. If it wasnt getting us lost it was not working at all. I will never use one again.

I have a garmin but if you hunt in a canopy of trees it does not pick up all the time, A compass and a map works all the time.
