Flying to Idaho this fall to do some elk/mulie hunting and taking my rifle. Anybody know what the rules are for flying with a gun and ammo? I've flown with guns many times but never with ammo.

Call your airline for special instructions but I have had no problem checking in gun cases. Pack your ammo separate.

I will suggest a good quality case. The baggage handlers will put to test the finest case.

Ishi has it right, especially about the gun case. It seems like the baggage manglers are on a mission to destroy your firearms, and it's worth dropping some money for a good case to confound them.

I've got a good all metal flight case (Cabela's Bulletproof) that I've used a few times and it's fantastic. I was wondering more about the ammo. Pack it in a seperate bag or can I put it in the case with the gun?

I haven't flown with firearms in a long time, but I seem to remember reading that the ammo has to be separate from the gun and in an unopened container. Again, the best bet would be to check with the airline.
