a slug barrel would do you better

If you have a barrel threaded for a choke, yes you will need to have a choke in place - otherwise you'll fill those really fine choke tube threads with just enough wad shavings and combusted powder that you won't be able to get a tube back in. You can use either the least-restricted choke you have, or you can buy one specifically for slugs - some are even rifled.

Any shotgun barrel threaded for removable choke tubes must have a tube in place or risk damage to the barrel, the type of choke needed depends on the type of slug you are using, a Fully Fifled Barrel works best but only with the Sabot Slugs Only, Rifled Slugs work best in smoothbore barrels but, Sabot Sulgs may work as well(Check Manufactures Spec. of both Ammo & Barrels), But be aware that some barrels are overbored larger than their Gauge, to which they cannot fire any Slugs through them! Also a D.S.G. might be a good investment too?
