I've used WD-40 on my shotguns for over 50 years, even leaving my guns alone in their case for a year or more, and have had no problems with rusting, gumming up or misfiring (except for bad ammo). WD-40 functions as a solvent, displaces moisture and provides a light lubricant. I would only add that, if you use the gun a lot, it would probably be good to also use a light gun oil on moving parts.
