The .270 is a good rifle for big game that still has a fairly flat trajectory. I know a lot of people who elk hunt with them with no trouble. The 30-06 i agree would be a superior gun if you want it for anything larger than an elk, like moose for instance although I don't doubt that a 270 could take one down.

Both are great rifles for big game. They are almost ballistically identical when shooting the same ammunition/bullet weight and type. The 30-06 does have a much wider range of bullet weights and types available in commercial ammo. If you want to use a bullet bigger than 150 gr. you'll need to go to go with the 30-06 for commercial ammo. For hunting in the lower 48 states either one is a good choice, unless you want to hunt moose, then you'll need the 30-06. Personally, I have a 30-06 and my son uses a .270. Both drop deer and elk equally well.

I have both a .270 and a .30-06. I have killed deer and elk with my .270 mostly because, thanks to Jim Carmichael's article written, oh maybe 20-25 years ago,(I know I had hair when I read it) I have my gun zeroed in to shoot 2.75 inches high at 100 yds. At 174 yds I am at 3" above line of sight and dead on around 245-249 yds. When it get out to 296 yds I hit 3" below line of sight. That is pretty much 300 yards with a point blank 6" window. I am shooting 150 gr Hornady with a muzzle velocity 3000 to 3100 fps. You can't do that with a 30-06 because it loses too much energy too fast and with its trajectory you will be lucky to get out to 250 yds with the 6" window.
So I shoot .270. I know lots of people who love their .30-06 and God bless them. We each have what we love and we can all get along.

I personally have a model 7 '06 I use it for anything from deer up to elk including bear. I woul use a 30'06 over a 270 any day. because its more versatile, you can use if for pretty much any game here in america. Even some game in africa. The guns got enough punch if you have the correct shot placement.

I am a young hunter who prefers a more level shot. I also only hunt whitetails and plan to do some elk hunting in the future. My gun is a 270, my father in law uses a 30 06 he prefers a heavier bullet because we live in and hunt in a area were thickets are thick and likes a bullet that will not go go off course do to hitting a branch. Both of us has never had to use more then one shot to bring down white tail. and both of us rarley miss a shot. Soi would say the better gun would be the one that feels best and cost less.
