Whats the best gun for deer and other big game also critters like coyotes and foxes and stuff. since most of my big game hunting with it will be in thick woods in northern mn while most of my hunting will be open field coyote hunting. thanks and caliber would preferably be 30-06 thanks

What's wrong with that Mosin Nagant? Beyond that for an all round rifle you could look at the Win Mod 70 264 Win Mag.

What you are looking for would be best by getting two different calibers. Look at the NEF with a 30-30 barrel for woods hunting and a .204 or .243 for open fields. The ones i have are real good shooters and both above can be set with a scope if desired.

Cabela's has those Model 70's in 264 Win Mag. I think they are $1500. My 264 is a Remington 700 but they only made them in that caliber for a few years. I bought mine new in 1970 for $140. Another option would be to have a rifle rebarreled to 6.5 - 284. That's another hot round.

DSM: At least the negatives are across the board every time so they mean even less. I’ll go ahead and post so I can get my -1. One of my best purchases of late was a 7mm Rem Mag. Great gun that shoots very flat and also has plenty of bullet weights for varied game.

dsm I like my mosin a lot and it shoots very tight groups at least I think cause the snow was flying up at around the same area BUT THE THING SHOOTS 8 INCHES HIGH WHEN THE SIGHTS ARE ADJUSTED TO IT. and the thing is around 4 feet long but the main thing is is that it shoots 8 inches high so I think what I may do is take some 12ga wire and have my dad weld it on to there but yes other wise I love my mosin and it has beautiful wood and the old stick the bullet down the mussel trick for old guns to see if they are wore out is practically like new if not new and is not counter bored but I'm wondering if the reason its like that is when you look at the barrel head it may seem a little miss shaped.

I don't know what you did with that old rifle. I didn't see anything on here about the cure for the chanmbering problems or if you did finally put a scope on it. If it groups well then it is accurate. But if you can't get the sights to shoot to your point of aim then you need to consider shims, if possible, or using a file and a punch to get the sights right. That cartridge is very similar to a 308 and would be fine for deer or coyotes. I would not start welding on it. There are acceptable ways to adjust fixed sights if need be and I would read up on them.

its not that I need t file it down that's the last thing I want to do its just that when they refurbished them they cut the front sight down to low and there for it shoots about 8 inches high. so the front post literally looks like 12ga wire painted black so I was thinking why don't I just add more or cut that one off drill down and put some new in there then have my dad weld it in then paint it black and then file it down to perfection.

I think we all know who gave out the minuses.
I've been on this site for four years. There are a lot of good people on this site who give great answers and posts. It is sad to see this site come down to this: child's play.
I would like to see a person whom gives a 'No' to a comment also give a reason why they don't agree with that post. It is easy to hit the 'No', but harder to give a logical answer to disagree with a post.
                    DSMbirddog.... I know... unreasonable minuses.
I'll be giving everyone a 'Yes' to offset the 'No's", hopefully that will be of help.

@Johnnie, I know what you mean. I've been on the site about 4 years as well, and it seems to me that the level of discussion has fallen below what it was when I was a new member. In many cases people seem to be afraid to debate an issue because someone is going to call them names, -1 their posts, etc. I for one would like to see OL do away with -1s entirely. If you think someone's comment is good, you can just give them a +, but if you disagree, you should have to give a reasoned, well-thought-out response, not just hide behind the anonymity of a -1.
BTW, sorry about hijacking your thread Blake.

Sorry to address this in your thread Blake, but Johnnie and Huntfishtrap: I agree with you both. It is very obvious who is leaving all of the negatives. I also would like to see OL get rid of the -1s, but I would go one further. I think OL should get rid of the user leaving nothing but -1s. There has to be a way for the site to monitor user activity like that, so it should be easy for them. This behavior is childish and is driving good users away. To the person leaving the -1s: Yes, you may still be licking a few wounds, but either contribute or leave us alone. (Now, bring on my -1.)

As is my custom +1 for everyone. Now,to whomever the thoughtless negative personality is- get a backbone and post your disagreements in the light of day you coward.

                            Back to the question's subject.
I used the ought 6 for decades to take all kinds of game. Loads for this caliber range from the 55 grain accelerator at 3857 fps a truly deadly round on all varmints, up to the 270 grain enough to knock a moose or grizzly down in its tracks. In my humble opinion the 06 is the most versatile gun on the market.
                            later,
                            charlie

Blake, there are multitudes of good hunters on this site. All of the advice you have already recieved is good stuff! I, however, would advise you to ignore it all. Borrow and hunt with as many different types of guns you can, until you find that 'magic' one for you. Caliber, make, and model don't matter as much as you having confidence in your gun. Accuracy is even over rated. If you can keep a group to 3 inches at one hundred yards, you'll likely kill anything you decide to shoot at.
It's like the Chevy vs Ford controversy. They are both good vehicles and get the job done. It's all personal preferance.
                              Good luck!
