I second the NEF Handi Rifle. I have several of them and they shoot great. When you change barrels the scope stays with the barrel so it is always zeroed in. i also like the flexibility of the variety of calibers.

For hunting or general shooting? I've heard great things about the HiPoint carbines in 9mm, .40, and .45, but have yet to shoot one.
Price range is $300 to $350 depending on caliber.

I don't know what they cost now, or even if you can find one available...but the US Army M1-Carbine in .30 caliber (a 'pistol' cartridge), might be just the thing you're looking for.
