I am thinking of getting a .204 Ruger rifle (OL sexiest cartridges) but everyone is telling me to pick up a .22/250 for varmint.

If you are going to be shooting at over 300 yards I would go with the .22-250. If all of your shots will be at 300 yards I believe either caliber will do great.

The 22-250 has stood the test of time, the bullet selection is much better than the 20 cal. And with the heavier bullets comes a higher BC which helps with wind deflection.

Yeah, JM has it mostly covered, but I would add that if you are going to be using it very much for coyotes, then I would get the .22-250, as I'm a little doubtful of the .204's knock-down power for critters that big, at least at longer ranges.

Personally I would get a .223 as you have a large ammo selection, both premium varmint and low cost practice and surplus ammo.

The .22-250 will only provide an edge over the .223 on the very long shots (greater than 300 or 400 yards), but you could stalk closer and make the hunt more enjoyable.

Try the short action savage 22-250. I've got one and it shoots the tightest groups of any of my rifles.
