Should a gun be stored with the chamber open? I would think not because it would wear down the springs. Can anyone confirm this for me?

No, I would not store it with the chamber open, both for the reason you stated and the fact that the action would get very dirty/dusty inside if it was open to the air.

I've always been taught the firearm should be stored with the chamber closed.

I've heard this go either way...Now for the open chamber storage argument. Keeping the chamber open allows air to flow through the barrel and you won't have moisture build up and will lower the chance of rusting in the barrel. But Huntfishtrap's argument is legit too. I say just clean your guns and keep them oiled properly and won't have to worry either way you go...

As long as it is stored in proper conditions, it doesn't matter. You will never wear out the springs by leaving it open because a spring only wears out by fatiguing (when it is actually in motion).

Well,I store my guns with the chamber closed. As long as they are cleaned out so they wont rust or anything, you should be fine. I've even known people that own bolt actions take the bolt out and store it seperately.
