My vote is .300 Savage. Kills black bear and deer no problem.

I think they are both excellent cartridges, however, the wide bodies reduce the round count in the magazine. If you want a magnum, I still swear by the .300 Win. I believe any of the smaller .30 Cal cartridges to be a better choice: 30.06, .308, .300Savage, etc.

I would agree with landcruiser, the 300 Win Mag is the way to go if you want a 30 magnum. My biggest concern with the 300 SAUM is whether it will even be around in ten years.

I'm not a fan of the 30 cal short mags. They lack the ability to launch the heavier bullets at the same velocity as a standard 300 win. A standard 300 mag has the ability to use the 190 and even 200 gr bullets, and you lose that ability somewhat with the shorter cases. A 300 win mag with 190 grain bullets truly is in a class by itself. Between the two you list, I second the fact that the 300 wsm will far outlive the rsaum. Nothing worse than having a gun you can't find ammo or brass for.

I know it was not a choice, but my vote would go to the .300 Weatherby magnum over both of them.

I have shot most of the .300 Mags, and I still say that for performance vs recoil, Win Mag is the optimum. Those few hundred fps's you gain from the 'super' magnums really pay a price on your shoulder. That said, handloading give all the magnums a range of performance that allows you to use them for any type of hunting you want. Truly a one gun for everything rifle.

My friend hunts coyotes with a 300 wsm and lets just say it's a good thing he doesn't sell the pelts. About a baseball sized exit hole at 200 yards
