Storing long guns....muzzle up or muzzle down?

I had friend tell me of a rifle that was stored muzzle up, in hunting season he pulled the trigger on a deer and click nothing, as he was lowering the rifle it fired. The problem was oil built up around the firing pin that after years of this it looked like varnish so after seeing this I store my long guns muzzle down.
