Storing long guns....muzzle up or muzzle down?

  • #2
Muzzle down keeps any excess oil from draining into the wood buttstock or pooling in an action. I'm always careful to wipe of excess oil, but I ain't perfect and might miss some, so butt-up is best.

I had friend tell me of a rifle that was stored muzzle up, in hunting season he pulled the trigger on a deer and click nothing, as he was lowering the rifle it fired. The problem was oil built up around the firing pin that after years of this it looked like varnish so after seeing this I store my long guns muzzle down.

That is correct, muzzle down is best.

I must respectfully disagree. Muzzle up is best to preserve the crown thereby your rifle's accuracy.
Built up oil on the firing pin is due to years of poor cleaning procedures.
Where do you find gun storage units made for muzzle down storage?
