The 20 and 35 are the number of grains of black powder in the original cartridge. In 30-30 Winchester it is a 30 caliber rifle with 30 grains of black powder. You can tell cases that were originally designed to be a black powder because they have the two cartridge separated by a dash. The 30-40 Krag is an exception to the rule.
