Why aren't rotary magazines popular in rifles today except the 10/22?

I will venture that space and weight coupled with cost are the prime drivers- I have handled some slick Savage 99s with rotary magazines with cartridge counters. I will add they sported receiver sights and not scopes. With manufacturers looking to reduce weight, slim the stock girth and cut costs. It was a great idea (in my mind) one might find in some pricey European rifles. Detachable polymer magazines are reliable, light and quiet. Kinda like detachable wheel well skirts
