I received a 300 savage last year that is a hundred years old. I shot a box of shells useing open sightsand couldn't even hit it a four by four piece of card board once. The rifling is a little warn but not bad any ideas as to why I can't shoot straight?

have a competent gunsmith check the rifle. check for tightness in the action, barrel erosion and just an overall inspection for loose or damaged parts. also consult them on the proper ammunition to use, the newer ammunition shoots at much higher pressures. you may want to consult a good handloader to develop the proper load. but from what you described the main cause is probably barrel erosion or wear.

I would start out by trying to get it on the paper at 25 yds. I think you need to find out where it is hitting and then go from there. 300 Sav ammunition today is loaded at the same pressure levels as it was 75 years ago unless it states specifically on the box that it is not for use in older guns. I've run into that with 45-70 but I've never seen it on 300 Sav.
