I recently purchased a scope mounting kit to improve my shooting accuracy. The instructional DVD says to level the scope to the gun using a level in the bolt raceway and one on the top scope turret cap. This works fine on some of my guns but how do you level a scope on guns without that bolt raceway, such as my Knight KP1?

I sometimes level the butt of the stock. Some have a vertical line running through the middle of the butt pad, this can be leveled straight up and down meaning the rifle will be level. Even eye balling the rifle can get you very close to level. I can usually tell if the scope is canted one way or another.

One way that I have leveled the scopes on this type of rifles was to position the gun in my cleaning box and plumb the rifle without the scope in the rings and then very carefully install the scope and then place the level on top of the scope and lock the rings down. A trick for those of us too cheap to buy a boresight is to remove the bolt and use a small (air rifle) scope to look through the barrel. This will show you very accuratly(sp?) where the gun is pointing. Align the scope to the same point and you will be on paper at 25 yds.

To properly align the reticle in your scope with a rifle you need only one small bubble level with a flat bottom surface and a bench vice with padded jaws to grip the barrel. The first step is to affix your bases to the receiver. Place the bubble level on the flat surface on the base and rotate the gun until it is level from side to side and tighten down the vice.

Once you have the scope in the rings and on the rifle use the same bubble level on the elevation turret, preferably with the cap off. Do this with the rings semi-tight so you can rotate the scope into level by hand with moderate resistance. This will put your crosshairs dead even with the rifle and because you’re using the scope bases it works with any receiver profile or rifle configuration.
