Most lubricants assuming your talking oils will be just fine. They may gum up a bit but should cause no problems. I use hoppes for everything and I've had my shotgun in freezing rain to heavy snow in single digits and no problems. Just don't over do it would be my only caution/suggestion.

I use WD-40 with no issues. Just be sure to keep it off the firing pin end of the bolt. Running the action every now and then is not a bad idea either.

I have no experience with extreme cold and lubricants, but I have found that WD-40 will get gummy over time in ordinary use. I have read of using a graphite lubricant in really extreme cold.

You might investigate Dri-Slide.

If what you say is true when using WD40, your not cleaning your equipment enough. For arctic conditions, I used automatic transmission fluid in my bolt guns. Although semiautomatic firearms will work fine, using a extremely light lubricant is subjecting your equipment to punishment
