a centerfire has a primer in the center of the cartridge. A rimfire the primer is built into the rim of the cartridge. Typically centerfires have larger bullets but many old cartridges of different sizes were rimfire.

The main difference between the two is that the centerfire cartridge has the firing pin hit it in the center of the backend of the cartridge to set off the primer. A rimfire cartridge is usually small enough that it can be hit anywhere on the backend of the cartridge.

rimfire hits the bullet near the rim but centerfire cartridges hit the center primer.

You mean cartridge, the firing pin hit the rim of the case on the cartridge.

This one is pretty basic and defined by the location of the primer on the cartridge. It's in the name. Centerfire has a primer in the center and will ignite when struck in the center. Rimfire has the primer in the bottom rim of the cartridge and striking the rim will cause it to ignite.
