I am looking into getting a .22lr for shooting at targets and the possible squirrel or two. So, what is the best overall bolt action rim-fire rifle/scope combo? It does not have to be a rifle/ scope kit.

marlin has built thier reputation on ,22 cal rim fires i'd start there

Not a bolt action, but the rugar 10-22 is a great gun. I like just a cheap bushnell 3 x 9 scope on it.

I have a Marlin model 25mn in 22mag that I love.It's topped with an old weaver 3x9 from the used case. My 22lr is an old Ranger model 103-2 with open sights. While the Marlin is deadly, I've found myself a better shot because of the Ranger, mainly due to the open sights. My advice is to go with a Marlin, but forget the scope.You'll only make yourself a better shot.

Get a Savage Mark 2 fv, and you will want a Tasco rimfire scope, as it doesn't have open sights, but you will not regret it-hands down the best rimfire rifle for the money(msrp $250)on the market. It is more accurate than Marlin, and has a much better trigger.
