With deer season coming up had a discussion with a co-worker about a rifle he bought. He got a deal on it the guy who sold it threw in a bipod, scope, and what he had left for ammo. Anyway the guy had bought the thing brand new and had been using the wrong weight bullet for the twist in the barrel and was probably why he sold it cheap. Got me thinking about my .270 what would be the best bullet weights to use for a .270 with a 24 inch barrel with a 1:10 inch twist rate?

Winchester introduced the .270 with a 130 grain bullet. The standard twist rate for the .270 is 1:10 and is enough to stabilize the span of 0.277 inch bullet weights from 90 - 180 grains. There is no wrong bullet weight for the .270, only wrong bullet weight for its intended purpose.
The 130 grain weight would be good on deer, antelope, sheep, goats, feral hogs and black bear. The 150 grain would be good on the aforementioned game plus elk and moose. There is the 140 grain bullet that sits in between the 130 and 150 grain bullet class. The 90 and 110 good for prairie dog, woodchuck, and coyote. Sierra makes a 135 grain bullet for target shooting. Also made is a 180 grain bullet. There is also other .270 bullet weights.
Just like the .270 Winchester, the 6.8mm Remington SPC takes a .277 bullet.
I've been handloading for the .270 for roughly 13 years. I've only used my handloaded ammo in my .270, no factory rounds except for the ones Savage used in testing the rifle. I handload, practice, and hunt using a 150 grain bullet. I practice using Sierra Game King and hunt with Nosler Ballistic Tip. One of these days I will play around with the different bullet and bullet weights for the .270.
