i live in south eastern oklahoma & in the last few years there have been a lot of bear & mountain lion sightings in this area, personaly im out in the mountains & rough country & have been since i could walk, & ive never seen one, id rather not but if it comes down to it i normaly carry a savage model 110 in a 30-06 with 150 grain core- lok shells will they do the job, if it come down to that?

I think that load would work fine, though I might go up to a 180-gr. bullet for the bears. But hit them right with either and those animals won't go too far.

That gun should do it, But it wouldn't hurt to have a backup, in case you put your rifle down to take a leak, etc. and realize you have become the prey
I almost always carry a Smith 629 Classic Hunter when hunting or tromping around in less than urban areas. I use a shoulder holster so it won't be flapping around and beating my hip to a pulp. It's also easier to acquire a target quickly in those, shall we say, adrenaline-charged moments that you need adequate firepower,so you can go home and clean your drawers.

A 30/06 would more than kill a mountain lion, but I have to agree with everyone else I would go to a 180 grains or bigger if you can get it for the bear.

It's very possible to hunt bear with a .30-06 even brown bear, canucks do it all the time. Heck i think they use .303brit which is probably closer to .308 anyway.

For bear don't be afraid to fire a warning shot. It can be a very effective deterrent without having to kill the animal.
