Anderson I wonder how things measure up when you factor the bullet weight into the equation with fps, gr to arrive at the most efficient cartridge. How you do that I have no idea. Nevertheless, I am sure the 30-06 would score well!

If you are looking at equal loading of powder the .30-06 and the .223 are the most efficient cartridges. By most efficient I'm talking about muzzle velocity per weight of powder (fps/grain).

Patrick 88 have hunted with a little Remington Mohawk rebarreled to a 250-3000. That is a terrific round, light recoil, easy to reload and accurate. Well balance cartridges tend to spawn other round- the 220 Swift and the 22-250 are offsprings of this great little 25 caliber. A 250 Savage in the Reminton Model 7, the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Classic or the full stock short actioned Ruger International would be a great combination.
There are so many new cartridges that is hard to keep up. I don't know much about the Ruger round mentioned by Daniel.

Don't forget about the 204 Ruger. Hornady makes a 32 gr. v-max that comes out of the muzzle at 4,225 fps.

well guys looks like you are good at your gun facts but how about the 250,3000 savage first gun to top 3000 fps is pretty close to both of your selections.
