I am looking for a new deer rifle but I cant decide what to buy. I need something moderately priced and reliable and larger than a .30-.30 any suggestions?

I would suggest looking at the Marlin XS7 or XL7 in .308 caliber to begin with. These rifles are very affordable and offer excellent performance. But because you are making an investment in a rifle that will last many years, look around and find one that is comfortable for you. Do not listen to just just person, be a shopper!!!!

I would agree with tduke, but you might also try looking in some of you your small gun shops and gun shows. You can get great finds and great values. I have found many a great rifle at these events and shops for alittle and have lasted me for years and taken many deer. But remember, beware, know what you are looking at, and be able to see any damages, kinda like looking for a used car, no your Gun Fax, and take a borelite with you. Good hunting and good luck.

cant go wrong with the good old 30/06.Ammo's relatively cheap and abdundant.

Weatherby's Vanguard line is a very good value. For $399 or less they give you guarenteed accuracy and a very dependable rifle. I shoot a Vanguard in 30-06 and consistantly shoot under 3/4" groups @ 100yds. As far as caliber goes 30-06 is hard to beat. It is the most efficient (velocity per grain of powder) big game cartridge and it can be used for deer and larger game like elk.

I agree with tduke, I bought a Marlin XL7 in 30-06 and have taken four deer with it. The rifle is well made and very affordable, can be purchased for less than $300.

I think Big Jake hit the nail on the head with the .30-.o6 caliber. It is arguably the best and most veratile caliber out there. A lot of people will argue that a .270 will rival the .30-.06 and for good reason, but the .06 remains more versatile in my opinion. There are so many different rounds for it and so many different load configurations if you are so apt. As for a rifle to shoot it in, if you just need a good, dependable rifle without much cost, the Savage works very well as does Weatherby's Vanguard as andersonjk4 stated. However, a surplus rifle such as the venerable M1 would be a dependable one that should last. To me, if money was no option, I'd probably get a Thompson Encore with the synthetic stock. The initial cost is, well to me, expensive, but you can buy additional barrels of different calibers that cost much less than buying a whole new setup for a different quarry. Hope it helps.
