Looking for ammo? Think micro loaders. In very rural areas where there are few or no zoning ordinances 1 and 2 man teams are loading and selling hard to find 9mm,.40, .308, etc. It will take some leg work to find these fellows, they don't do a lot of advertising. Make sure they are properly licensed.

The local Fleet Farms have maintained good selections of ammo including 22 long and LR. Around here it is the handgun, particularly the common carry calibers that are hard to find. Women have taken up handgun shooting big time. So I think it is the extra range time new gun owners need that is making 22 ammo hard to find.
I have always used my 22 pistol to keep my skills from perishing.
