10mm vs. .45 ACP for deer hunting - is the 10mm significantly better? We touched on this briefly in a previous discussion, but I thought I would go a little more in-depth. I know the 10mm has about 50% more energy on average, but the .45 has a bigger

Considering distance-- When it comes to handgun hunting I think of my handguns as bows that go bang and hunt accordingly.
That's about what I thought. Appreciate it. One more question - in my internet digging I've found a few references to guns failing under the beating administered by the heavier 10mm loads - slides cracking, internals failing, etc. Is that an issue to be concerned about?

The older 1911 Colt type pistols had trouble taking the increased recoil, the modern pistols do not really have that problem, they are engineered to handle the round. Also the 10mm has much more than 50% more power than a .45acp. The 10mm hunting loads have 726ftlbs of muzzle energy when most .45 rounds have less than 400. So yes it is a much more effective round.

I just bought a Glock G40, The Hunter, for a deer hunting partner, if the opportunity knocked. It is 10mm and has a 6.02" barrel, legal for deer hunting in the state I live in. If you look at ballistics of some of the factory loads, the .45ACP has as much energy at the end of the barrel as what a 10mm has at 100 yards. The info is out there. I would not be afraid to use my .45ACP 1911, but it is not legal. The 10mm has slightly more energy than a .357 Mag. Less than the .41 mag. Wikipedia is a great place to search for the info I have given, plus a whole lot more cool things that are handgunnish. I stress that firearm knowledge is more powerful than firearms.

Old thread, but I have some new anecdotal evidence.

Was just on a deer hunt in Ohio. One member shot a doe with a .45. The doe was down and he left it (don' do that without ensuring a kill) and came back 10 minutes later to find the doe had gotten up and walked off. Blood trail went cold.

Same hunt, I shot a 11 pt 270Lb buck with my 10mm using Underwood 200 grain XTP round. Killshot at 40 yards was a through and through involving both lungs. The buck didn't know it was hit and fell to the ground ~15 seconds later within 10 feet of being hit.

The .45 is the perfect weapon for social work, but is inadequate for hogs, deer, and larger. Sure it will kill a deer, but you want an ethical hunt.

For realistic deer hunting, get a 10mm, 357 magnum, or hotter.

Penetration and shot placement is "everything" to the hunter. Knowing this, let's take a look at the two calibers and compare.
              .45 acp-230 grain bullet leaving a 5 inch barreled 1911 est at 850-900 fps.
10mm 200 grain bullet leaving a 5 inch barreled Colt delta elite est at 1200 fps respectively.
Yes, the .45 acp will leave a bigger wound hole. But, will it penetrate to the lungs, heart, muscle, etc. I have compared the two loads via Hornady ammunition box loading data, and have found the 10mm will retain more energy 100 yards out than the .45 acp has coming directly out of the barrel. (Even with the .45 acp being a plus p rating.)
Carrying concealed, I would be served well by either caliber. Hunting javelina, wild boar, or whitetails, I'd prefer the flatter trajectory and power of the 10mm.

.45 acp I think will do a better job. I've hunted with a .45 and I didn't track it as far, because I could see the deer from the tree stand I was in.

To answer the question of 45acp on deer. I use Underwood 185gr +p loads. 1200fps. with 592lbs. on energy, right near a 10mm standard load. Would not hesitate on a deer less than 80yds. Proven! Also, I take deer with a 11" single shot cva scout pistol customized for me, using 180gr. HCGC from Underwood. I get roughly 1550fps and 865lbs at muzzle. Taken deer out to 125yds with complete pass through. Deer only went 30yds and expired. Folks, deer are thin skinned animal last I checked.

That's good advice and a good report on actual results.

With my .44mag, and having sufficient practice, I would take a 100yd shot if there was an ideal presentation. No low percentage shots.
Jimbo, I'm glad you mentioned the .357 mag as a valid hunting piece. Thanks for relating that. I sometimes carry a .357 as my sidearm when deer and pig hunting.

                              .45 acp-230 grain bullet leaving a 5 inch barreled 1911 est at 850-900 fps.
Can't argue with the numbers - thanks for posting them.

I wouldn't use the .45 ACP unless it was a very close shot. SO, I guess the 10mm would be better.

Recently, I considered the 10mm for hunting. So, I went to the local gun shop to handle a few different models. No thanks! The grip is by necessity deep and it seemed uncomfortable even for my XL sized hands.

I'll stick with my .357 Magnum Ruger SP101 with its 4-inch barrel. It should perform about as well as the 10mm. If I really want to punch some pigs, then it will be the Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt with +P loads. Both revolvers have much more comfortable grips.

The Kimber is almost twice as heavy as my SP101 and costs 4 times more.
