Lots of things. Tannerite, blocks of ice from the lake, cans of shaving cream, spray paint, etc. Lots of it makes a mess, so make sure you can contain it or lay a tarp down. Old baseballs/softballs/golf balls. When I was young we would shoot at big chunks of wood and then go at it with an axe until we found the bullet(yeah we were boring kids). I've always wanted to stack up phone books and see how many it took to stop certain rounds.

Depends what you're shooting with, if a rifle I like to use a golf ball, if you're good enough you can call which way the ball's going to go then shoot the opposite side and it works. If you're talking about shotgunning, I like to shoot shaken up cans of coke zero, it blows up pretty big without being expensive like tannerite or spraypaint.

So many inappropriate answers... so much internet monitoring...
Seriously, I can't say I've ever target shot anything that ended up being "exciting". I'm kind of a whatever junk is laying around, plus some set targets kind of plinker.
I have, however, shot pretty much empty propane cans. I imagine it's possible for the mix to be just right with maybe steel core ammo for a spark for that to work, but nothing ever happened.
Interesting thought that. Hollywood aside, shooting typical ammunition (nothing with a steel core) I've never shot at anything, including my steel rimfire trap, that created a spark. A puff of lead powder, sure. Why do movies feel the need to do that?

I was also wondering about an almost empty propane torch disposable tank?
I like the idea of the golf balls, got enough of them with splits in them to have some shooting.
Golf balls are fun though. We would shoot them low to see how high we could get them to go. I hit one that I lost over a tree that was half way up our backstop guessing some where around 60-70 feet high. We shoot 22mags.
