I have been wanting to get a knew hunting knife. I have read that there are all kinds of blades out there, but i do not know which one is right for me. I want to use it for skinning and gutting big game such as deer, elk, and bear. I would like to have a drop piont blade with good edge retention. Do you have any suggestions?

I would recommend the Buck Vanguard Drop point knife. It has good balance, has a good grip, a hard working blade and it is reasonable priced. The stainless steel knives can be a little harder to sharpen but that can be dealt with...this knife is a winner.

hands down cutco...i've had mine for 10 plus years, and only needed to sharpen it twice...which by the way, is done at no charge by cutco. if you find a used one on ebay for a good price, you can still send the knife to cutco and they'll sharpen it. lifetime guaranteed, and the company means it. if you get one, be careful...they are very sharp.

if you want a knife for skinning and gutting large game, forget the drop point and get a skinning blade with a gut hook. As far as brand, I'm a fan of Russell knives. Their hand made and last forever.

I'd second the Buck Vanguard drop point, but for a few extra bucks, I'd also recommend the Buck Alpha Hunter fixed blade, or my own personal fave, the Mini-Alpha. All hold an edge and sharpen easily when the need arrives.

I agree with bigjake on Russell knives. But I don't like guthooks on my knife blades. Buck Alphas and Vanguards in S30V are also excellent. You might also consider the Gerber Bell & Carlson - on sale at Cabela's. Excellent design and blade (S30V) for the money. Knives of Alaska are also worth the look in D2 or AUS8 steels).

So far, I've built a "bee vacuum" and a "swarm trap".
When I deploy the trap this spring, I'll need at least one hive....I hope!...
