My grandfather, then my Dad and I all say- "How else are they going to learn?" Oddly this sentiment is not shared by most parents today.
A hat tip to you jcarlin.

Thanks. Pure laziness on my part. I let them learn a lot the hard way because it beats the hell out of chasing them for 18 years. I've let every one of them get their hands close to, in my grip, things like the grill, woodstoves, and hot coffee cups. All the stuff little ones want to grab but shouldn't. Control the situation and let them get close enough that they realize they don't want to touch it, but don't let them get burnt. Not one of them ever continued to try. Ditto letting toddlers experience that heart in the throat moment when they tumble off the top of the staircase, but catch them before they hit. Was an end to the behavior of running to the top of staircases. Kids learn fast if we let them.

Child services would be called because I admitted to having hot things and gravity in the proximity of my children.

When I was younger and I cut myself somehow, I wouldnt tell my parent, I would clean away most of the blood, clean it, put some ointment on it, and depending on how big, if it is small cover with a band aid, if they are to small I would make my own with toilet paper and duck tape

The worst cut I have gotten wasnt from a knife though, I was smashing a wooden dresser for a fire when I was 12 with a softball bat and had to hold a piece that was to big to fit in the fire pit, it slipped and the edge which was almost like it was a saw went across my left hand, I was outside with my mom and siblings and all I did was grab were the cut was, walked inside, washed it in the bathroom sink, covered it in ointment, put a couple pieces of toilet paper on kt, wrapped it in duck tape, then went back outside and continued to smash the dresser

We used to call my dad Dr. Hook. Otherwise intelligent guy at least three times I can recall as a young teen he drove himself to the hospital because he skated a utility knife across his left hand. It's amazing he still had full feeling and all his tendons.
