I just bought a Barnett Jackal, it's coming on Friday. It says it comes with the scope and bolts, I also bought a rope cocking device. Will I need to buy anything else, like broad heads and extra bolts. Also, do you need to oil it like a gun?

I maintain my dad's crossbow for him, and I've never lubricated anything beyond putting rail lube on the rails whenever they get dry. I suppose you could oil the trigger and other internals, but I never have seen the need. Depending on how many bolts come with it, you may need to buy more. I'd want a half-dozen at the minimum. And you'll need broadheads if you plan to hunt with it. I'd recommend either a mechanical with a conservative cutting diameter (less than 1 1/2"), or a small fixed-blade like a Slick Trick. My dad uses Slick Tricks, and they're excellent. I would also recommend a good pair of string silencers if the bow doesn't already come with them. Hope that helps.

I have a Barnett and have oiled the pulley axel once before each season. I keep them clean and just a drop will do. Also keep the string waxed.
Keep all your arrows matched as much as possible and fixed broad heads work fine. NEVER dry fire the bow - you will break it. Keep a beater arrow to shoot into the ground when you are finished hunting. Also, don't leave it cocked overnight.
      Good luck, happy hunting.

Some bees wax on the rails and string. Light oil on pulley axles and wipe off metal bolts and screws to help prevent rust. Like JHP I prefer fixed blade broadheads that cut on contact.
Arrows that are shot out of crossbows today not bolts. When crossbows were used in warfare a short stiff metal rod (bolt) with no fletching or broadhead was used to pierce enemy armor. A lot of folks get bolts confused with arrows, I did too until someone corrected me with a little history lesson.
        Enjoy hunting.

I know the difference between arrows and bolts, but because most people seem to call any projectile fired from a crossbow a bolt, I've given up on correcting them.

I think the definition depends on the length? I have been told Xbows are bolts.

              Here is a clarification

              Crossbow
              From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the weapon. For other uses, see Crossbow (disambiguation).

Sketch by Leonardo da Vinci, c. 1500
A crossbow is a type of weapon, based on the bow, consisting of a horizontal bow-like assembly mounted on a stock, that shoots projectiles called bolts or quarrels. The medieval crossbow was called by many names, most of which derived from the word ballista, a torsion siege engine resembling a crossbow.[1]

My understanding is a quarrel is French for bolt. Here is a picture of a crossbow bolt.

This might be a little off-topic, but I can't understand how that could fly straight. I mean, it must've, because crossbows were very lethal weapons in the Middle Ages, but just looking at it, a bolt doesn't look very aerodynamic.

The answers here are really solid (and I love the discussion of bolt vs arrow. We had that same discussion internally, and charlie elk is correct; modern crossbow projectiles are arrows). The kit will come with a few arrows and field points. Definitely check out the grain weight of the field points - they are probably 125-grains - and match the weight when you buy broadheads. I highly recommend shooting off of telescoping shooting sticks - both for target practice and in the field. - Andrew McKean, editor-in-chief

It's weight forward which keeps it aligned. At an English museum I saw a demonstration of a bolt shot from a medieval crossbow puncture 3/8" steel armor then continue through a 12" ballistic gel cube.
