I need a tracking collar for my coonhound. For a one dog operation, in Illinois woodlots and crop fields, what do you recommend? GPS or Radio telemetry? try to keep it under or around $350

I'm not familiar enough with tracking units, so maybe a houndsman can help out there. I am a big believer in GPS collars for my bird dogs. Bells, beepers, nothing else works as well when you're frantic about the dog's location - especially in country with top-tier predators like mountain lions. Many speak well of the new SportDog Tek 2, which I've not tried; I've been very happy with the TriTronics Astro. Relatively simple to learn, no bells and whistles (training/shock) and probably available at a pretty good price since it was supplanted by the Alpha a while ago. Even a "good price" will still set you back more than $350, but how much is it worth to know where your dog is at all times?
