The belt would be the problem but the people I know with them have never had an issue that I know of or had to replace one. Those belts are pretty indestructible I think.

I've got a Honda Rancher. No belts at all.

The quality of belts have improved from days gone by. Polaris is one company that does put quality belts on it's ATVs. Always operate in low range when needed, this will prevent premature wear on any belt. The belt allows variable speed pulleys to provide smooth low/high transition for the "transmission". I have had the same belt since 2004 even with snow plowing, I do carry a spare but have not needed it. On the other hand, my nephew usually goes through a belt every year or so. He rarely uses low range even in tough terrain or plowing snow. He says,"This Kawasaki twin has so much power, I don't need low range!" Well, that's why he has a belt problem. If it slips in water, you have a housing leak.

My Yamaha 600 grizzly is a '98 with 400 'woods' miles and it has the original belt. Tow deer, logs and other ATV's and it is still good. Yamaha dealer said to run the speed up every so often so to go through the range of the variable ratio and not to just run at one speed all the time.
