    You earn points by answering questions, commenting on pics and articles, and participating in discussion boards. The more points you earn the more stars you get showing other users the amount you have done to earn points.

      The used to have a page explaining it. It's like a contribution ranking to the site. I couldn't find the OL version, but it's exactly the same as the Field and Stream site. Also, no the point system does not get you free gear. It may have at one point, but it hasn't since I've been a member.
