I took up pier fishing last month here in the northern Gulf of Mexico and have been having more fun than a backsliding Baptist. Have caught a number of good king mackerel and a couple of good bull reds, also some sharks, which I broke off. It's a blast. Are there any other pier rats out there?

I have only had the pleasure of pier fishing once in my life. Mainly caught a bunch of small sharks, but it was extremely fun. A friend of mine had a 40pd+ king mackeral on, but we were using 20pd test and it broke trying to hoist it up the bridge....just so happens he had stayed while we left for lunch so we couldn't help him get it up.

Add to that some of my favorites like flounder, white trout, specks, sheepshead, and the stingray. A ten pound stingray will pull and fight like a fish that weighs five times as much and can make some exciting runs, but with the dangerous tail falls into the same release category as the sharks.

Forgot to add, my favorite pier is private owned on Fort Morgan road. I like to fish it at night with under water lights. The lights attract small bait fish which creates a natural chum affect.
