use live bait: night crawlers, grasshoppers, etc from your backyard. shop the bargain caves of Cabela's and Bass Pro. Shop at Wal-Mart. Check Craigslist and eBay. Check manufacturer's websites for coupons and deals.

USe canned corn as bait and possibly carpool to the spot. Split the cost of gas. Bring your lunch instead of buying at a gas station.

Stay local and somewhat close to home that's what us broke college kids do. Never hurts to fish near your parents or a friends parents house either, the foods free then.

Didn't think of Craigslist, thanks for mentioning it.

I use lower cost gear, either from a retailer or from yard sales. Also, I fish from the bank as local as possible to reduce fuel costs.

Start your own worm or cricket farm for bait,
Check out the clearance section of local stores, don't be afraid to look around local estate sales.

Make friends with people who have boats.
