When the ice starts to thaw here in Michigan, I always get my fishing poles out early and practice with a washer. I have actually lost them in trees and wrapped around power lines. What kind of things do you guys do when you get the itch to go fishin

I usually pull out my tackle boxes and organize them, since I never seem to be able to keep them clean as the spring and summer go on. I also try to fix any issues with my reels and re-spool with new line to get ready.

I don't get much of an itch to fish before ice-out, so I don't have to worry about it. Lol

Service and clean reels and put on new line if necessary.

Like the other guys, I usually pull out my open water tackle and do maintenance.

I used to lay a hula-hoop on the ground and practice casting with my fly rod, flipping/pitching jigs, or tossing hook less trout spoons. People have looked at me strange, but I can get a fly under a 1' overhanging branch and get a bass jig inside a soup can today

Fiddle with my tackle box and reels think about a charter trip. Pray that this is the year I finally catch a Musky.

Might be due to location, but where I live the water isn't frozen long enough for me to really start getting annoyed. I can usually wait for the ice to thaw without wanting to fish too bad. I'd just drive south if I wanted to fish(not the best idea economically, obviously).

Mostly I bury it in hiking and shooting this time of year.
Inevitably I take a couple of unproductive days on the outback creek. Gets me out in the stream, even though it's a warm water fishery and the fish seemed to have found deeper (often iced over) holes this time of year.

This year, I'm considering doing some fox or coyote hunting.

The one thing I used to do but almost never do anymore is to watch hunting/fishing shoes. I devour a lot of print, but the last show that held my interest was The Best and Worst of Tred Barta.
                What a shame.

Usually in March I get the urge to get reels loaded with new line. Tackle boxes don't need much work but I do look through and inventory what may need to be replenished. Then by mid April I'm ready to go. This time of year I work on reloading ammo and a few trips to the range.
