Growing up in the fifties I subscribed to Sports Afield Magazine. The fishing editor was Jason Lucas whom it was said fished 365 days a year. He always described the difference between a Largemouth bass and a Smallmouth bass as the number of scales in the lateral line below the eyes. Now what is called a Smallmouth looks to me like what used to be called a Kentucky or spotted bass. When was this distinction changed and why?
