How can we get the California Dept. of fish and game to change the regulation on a fishing license ? now it's from January to January,if you buy it in May you loose 7 months. It should be the whole 12 months period Is it unreasonable?

Thats the way it is in Maine, not sure exactly but i think that is fairly common. It would be pretty convenient for most people if it was set up that way, but it doesn't affect me as i have a lifetime hunt and fish for maine.

It would be a paperwork nightmare to keep track when licenses expire. Jan to Jan is the best way.

If you don't tend to fish late winter/early spring anuary anyway, what's the difference? You're only getting half a year's use out of your license anway. Nothing wrong with that, but a more fitting solution would be to pro-rate them, which would be an even bigger nightmare. Next step would be paying by hours on water. I don't know what they cost out there, but consider it your annual dues.
