What was the first fish you caught this year (2016?) Now that spring’s rolling in, curious to see how everyone’s season is starting off.

Sigh. Sadly I'm still trying to catch my first fish of 2016. I've been out only a few times this year. Once in February for steelhead (boy that was fun) and twice in the past couple of weeks for spring pike fishing. Nothing but a big goose egg so far!

I've caught exactly one brook trout. That was last week on our Opening Day; I usually do better but I got a late start and most of my favorite stretches of stream were already occupied when I got there. I do have tomorrow off, however, and plan to fish as long as I can stand it (forecast is for snow showers, brisk winds, temps in the 30s). On the plus side, I should certainly have more water all to myself in weather like that.

I'll let you know when I catch it, lol. I'll be the first person to admit that I'm not a big rod-and-reel fisherman, although I bowfish almost every weekend from May through August. I'll probably get out redhorse fishing here in the next week or two, though.

Tioughnioga, do you fish artifical water only or can you use the good ol' standby garden hackle ? Years ago I
would have been out there with you in those temps, but now I am much more comfortable in where it is snug
and warm and recalling the old days! And I catch just as much too ! Good luck tomorrow.
            .

Now that the regular season is open, bait is allowed and you can keep up to five trout of any size statewide. The streams I fish are also open outside the regular season, all year, but then it's artificials-only, catch-and-release only. You can go bonkers trying to keep all of New York's county-by-county, stream-by-stream regulations straight. Anyway, I do drift a worm now and again, or use one of those old-fashioned "2-ways," the colorado spinner with the beads and the bait-hook. I like using salted minnows, too, but the price went through the roof this year at my favorite little baitshop. Thanks!

Heh, I've got you all beat it looks like. I'm sort of the opposite of HFT. I can't wait to have a rod and reel in my hands. I caught my first fish of the year on January 1st...was a bluegill. I'm mainly a bass fisherman, so that's what most of my days on the water consist of. Going to go trolling for stripers this weekend(striped bass to be specific before HFT jumps in with a responce to that).

Why not set out some jugs or bank lines? Easy to have a fun day running some of those no matter who you are with.

You're a braver man than I. No way I'd be fishing in those conditions, lol.

I don't know, man. Just never been a diehard fisherman. I feel like I should be able to offer a better explanation, but I don't know how to articulate it. Actually, your mention of jugs and bank lines made me curious to look up our regs concerning their use. Apparently we can't use jugs unless we're within sight of the jugs at all times. Seems to me that that kind of defeats the purpose. Bank lines are a different story, although my corner of the state has some special regs concerning them as well. They're only allowed on a handful of rivers. I have to admit, they do sound interesting though. I've never used them, so I wouldn't know where to start. Do you have any tips?

And here I thought trolling for stripers meant driving around after dark looking for skunks... ;-D

Lol, January 1st? Were you ice fishing or are you lucky enough to live in a warm sunny part of the US?

Given my proficiency with a fly rod and the immense frustration it encumbers me with, I'd say a string of profanities the likes of which would burn your virgin ears
